What does the phrase "DEVIL DOG" mean to the USMC?

Well LAVADOG I have to agree with you 110%. When I servied with the Corps in the mid-sixties I was taught the history of the Marines from Tun Tavern to prsent day and was told about all the famous battles. I still have many books on Marine Corps history and am very proud of wht they have accomplished over the 233 years. I will always be proud to be a Marine and will always stand tall when called any of the nicknames such as Jarhead, Leatherneck or Devil Dog. The Marines are the greatest fighting organization the world has ever known and to have been allowed to serve and fight with them is one of my proudest accomplishments. I suggest these young Marines who don't know our history do some reading. It is an amazing story and one well worth knowing.
